Samsung SDI has impressed visitors to this year’s FDP International 2008, Samsung has treated onlookers showing off a full HD OLED Tv’s and a jaw dropping High Def plasma display.
As well as displaying a flexible OLED Display that is 0.5mm thick which raised the bar for OLED display manufactures, Samsung displayed another two state of the art high definition TVs, one was a 40-inch Full HD OLED Display (biggest of its nature) and the other was a huge 63 inch 4kx2k Super Hi-Vision Plasma TV.
The Samsung 40 inch 1080p OLED TV is the biggest in its segment, it has a 1920×1800 pixels , with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, color gamut of 107% NTSC, luminance of 200cd/m2 and a thickness of just 8.9 mm, quality here wasn’t at its highest levels but we can be sure that this will improve with subsequent generations of OLED screens.
As the icing on the cake Samsung SDI displayed a 63-inch HiDef 4096×2160 Ultra Fine Definition PDP, with a pixel size of 0.339×0.363mm, the problem will be finding content that is 4kx2k -unless you happen to be a major film maker and have a Red Camera
And for those who want a more down to earth TV we have a wide range of Samsung LED Televisions
Gizmodo has an interesting story on Samsung showing a flexible OLED screen that is just .5mm thick.
Samsung where showing off an ultra-thin ‘flapping’ OLED screen at FPD International 2008. Samsung demonstrated the flexibility of the OLED display by letting it bend and flutter in the wind.
At a paper-thin .5mm, the 4-inch screen is still able to create an image of 480×272 pixels, with a 100,000:1 contrast ratio and 100% reproduction of the NTSC colour gamut.
Obviously this is a demo model to show case this flexible OLED technology and a 480×272 display is not exactly huge – it shows one possible direction the TV industry may take in the future, with Sony showing off a similar display a few weeks back.
At CES in January, it will be interesting to see if any progress has been made in getting this technology into production – probably not for a while yet – so a TV you can roll up and take with you will be a few years off.
Interestingly, Samsung commented that they could have made the display even thinner A Samsung spokesman said:
"It is technically possible to make the panel thinner, However, it is difficult to further reduce the thickness of the flexible substrates and circuit components around it."

Apple introduces the new stylish MacBook, carved from single blocks of aluminium in a new production process that Apple says results in a ‘thinner, greener and more robust chassis’.
The new MacBook model has the new addition of 30% more energy efficient LED backlit displays.
Measuring 0.95in tall and weighing 4.5lbs, the MacBook uses the nVidia GeForce 9400M graphics processor which boosts performance by a whopping 500% over previous models.
The new MacBook is available in two models: the Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz and the MacBook Pro.
The MacBook Pro prices start at £1,299 and boast a new graphics architecture that crams in two GeForce graphics processors. It comes in two flavours: a 2.4GHz and a 250GB 5400 rpm hard drive and 2.53GHz model with a 320GB 5400 rpm hard drive.
The MacBook Air and the 17in MacBook Pro also got an overhaul. The Air’s waistline of 0.16in at its thinnest point and 0.76in at its thickest remains the same but it now comes with a bigger HDD or a 128GB SSD drive and a GeForce 9400M integrated graphics processor.
AJ Electronics store both the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, for more details please click here.
The new Blu-Ray disc was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video, as well as storing larger amounts of data than the traditional DVD.
The Blu-Ray format offers more than five times the storage capacity of DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc.
Recent development by Pioneer has increased its storage capacity to 500GB on a single disc by using 20 layers.
Blu-ray is currently supported by roughly 200 of the world’s leading consumer companies, and also has support from all Hollywood studios and many smaller studios as a successor to today’s DVD format.
Many studios have also announced that they will begin releasing new feature films on Blu-ray Disc day-and-date with DVD.
An article by The Guardian earlier this year suggested that Blu-Ray was on its way to the top:
“Sony’s Blu-Ray has finally won the battle of the high-definition DVD formats with Toshiba announcing it is to axe its rival HD DVD technology”.
But will Blu-Ray will be the DVD of the VHS generation?
