“LCD TV shipments from the world’s top-10 brand vendors are likely to expand 35% to 141.5 million units in 2010, accounting for 96% of the total global shipments, according to the paper. In 2009, the top-10 vendors are expected to see their LCD TV shipments increase 25% to 104.8 million units and account for 83% of worldwide shipments, it noted.” DisplaySearch

Leading the pack in annual shipments is Samsung Electronics, Samsung LCD TV shipments are expected to climb to 25 million units this year and grow another 28% in 2010 with 32 million units shipped.

Another sign of recovery is the new highest monthly record for large-size panel shipments, according to DisplaySearch global large-size TFT-LCD panel shipments reached 46.7 million units in June 2009, up 8% sequentially and 24% on year.

Some pundits thought that with the credit crunch people where going to stay in more and watch films on their home cinema equipment. Ordering in takeaway pizzas rather than going out to restaurants and cinemas. The positive figures for shipment of LCD TV’s seem to bear this out.

What about you are you upgrading your TV and staying in more?

The first question is about what size TV you are looking for, you have four choices here, small, medium, large and super large for +47 inch HDTV. This question more or less decides what the final suggestion will be.

Then you are asked what will be the primarily plan to use your HDTV, five choices here, with options ranging from movies to PC monitors.

Third question is a rather strange one, but according to LG is very important to improve your viewing experience, in this question you are asked as to what viewing receiver you will connect you LG HDTV to, again five choices here, you can choose from Sky HD, Sky +, Virgin Cable and even Analogue TV.

Fourth question doesn’t really influence much on the final result so we’ll skip that one. On the fifth question LG asks you how many HDMI sockets do you need, if you chosen smaller sized HDTVs you options are limited to two choices, with bigger sizes you will have four choices to choose from.

Sixth and Seventh question are rather similar because you are asked if intend in connecting a Blu-ray player or a high definition gaming console.

And finally for the eighth and final question LG asks if you intend on wall mounting your LG HDTV.

This is a pretty neat TV Guide by LG, but in my opinion LG missed out a really important question. LG forgot to ask what type of HDTV you are looking for Plasma or LCD.

Personal video recorders, which combine a Freeview digital tuner with the ability to pause, rewind and record live television, are especially popular, with one million devices being sold from January to march 2009 alone.

The Telegraph report that there are now almost nine million PVRs in UK homes, five million of which are Sky+ boxes, 2.6 million are Freeview recorders, and the rest are comprised of BT Vision, Virgin Media V+ and Top Up TV set-top boxes.

It means that most homes in the UK are ready for the digital switch over in 2012 and several areas of the country have already had their analogue service disconnected and are now digital-only.

Sony will be showcasing new series of high definition TVs with built in, interactive entertainment with the announcement of the first new BRAVIA LCD HDTV models with Internet applications called widgets that deliver real time information, as well as streaming video capability via integrated BRAVIA Internet Video Link.

Sony’s new XBR9 and Z-series models feature an Ethernet connection, allowing the sets to directly access Sony BRAVIA Internet Video content using an existing broadband connection.

Samsung is bringing the internet to the living room with the launch of a new service that enables viewers to access the web on their TVs. On display there will be a few new series 3, 4, 5 and 6 panels with the main focus being on their LED-backlit-ness with sizes ranging from 40-inches and up.

Panasonic is betting on high definition 3D TV technology and is planning in proposing a standard for Japan in the coming months. On their booth visitor will find top end HDTV like 0.33-inch thick Neo PDP Eco plasma TV and the 1-inch thick TC-P54Z1 VIERA plasma TV.

This is year at CES LG will be focusing on HDTV and mobile gear, with multidisplay laptop and HDTVs wired for broadband to Blu-ray players that can deliver Web content.

They must be something pretty amazing in the Dutch water supply right now. For just days after leaving the collective TrustedReviews jaw gaping open with its latest Aurea Light Frame TV, Philips has gone into innovation overdrive again with the Philips 42PFL9803H 42in LED LCD TV: its first LCD TV to use LED backlighting.

LED technology illuminates pictures using a whole array (128 in the Philips 42PFL9803H 42in LED LCD TV’s case) of conjoined but individually controllable LED backlight sectors, rather than the single, always-on fluorescent lamp. This allows you to turn off the lights completely in some areas of the picture, to deliver a near-perfect reproduction of black, while leaving LEDs in other areas at maximum illumination.

The Philips 42PFL9803H 42in LED LCD TV ’s LED lighting helps it produce pictures that makes it the finest performing LCD TV I’ve seen.

DisplaySearch annual look at global pricing of LCD TVs and Plasma TVs, show the biggest drop in price for LCD TVs was in Europe, followed by China, North America and Japan, dropping  20%, 16% and 4%. The price of plasma TVs fell 27% comparing September 2007  to September 2008 while older CRT based TV prices actually rose by 4%.

In general, larger screens saw more price drops with 52in LCD TV prices coming down almost 30% in the past year while prices for 20in LCD TVs fell by just 4%. In Europe, 46in LCD TVs recorded the biggest price cuts, dropping 37% from an average of around £1,300 in September 2007 down to around £850 in September 2008.

Strangely, while we all complain about Japan getting all the coolest tech and gadgets first.  DisplaySearch found that Japan continued to have the highest LCD TV pricing during September in almost all screen sizes – on average 25% higher!
