Ofcom has given the go ahead for Wireless TV’s to be launched by releasing part of the radio spectrum (57GHz- 66GHz) for general use.

As most living rooms have a pile of dusty cables piled up 6 inches deep behind the HDTV and Home Cinema gear – these new wireless TV sets will reduce the amount of clutter and make hooking up equipment simpler.

Panasonic will be the first to launch wireless HDTV sets using the new radio spectrum, with 46 inch and 54 inch plasma models going on sale within the next few weeks.

The HDTV screen is just one inch thick and has a receiver, the size of a cigarette pack, which clips on to the back of the set.

Panasonics wireless TV also comes with a transmitter, This sits in a cupboard along with the DVD player and Freeview or Sky box or any other equipment. All the entertainment equipment – including the television aerial – then plug into the transmitter, which sends out a wireless signal to the television set as long as the set is within ten meters of the transmitter.

The advantages of this high frequency wireless link is that it can transmit the large amount of data that HDTV requires – this also means the maximum range between devices is short, Panasonic are quoting 10m/ 30ft. The short range also means that there should not be interference from neighbors equipment as signals in the 60Ghz band wont penetrate walls very well.

LG are also keen to launch wireless TV using this new technology with Andrew Warner, a director at LG, said:

“Consumers want to have their home entertainment to fit in with the design of their house.

“It will be so much better being able to have all the boxes hidden in a cupboard and the television up on the wall, without running lengths of cable across the room.”

Wireless HTDV sets have been seen on sale in the USA as this shot of a Panasonic wireless TV in a show room shows.

Home Cinema equipment will also benefit from the release of this 60Ghz spectrum as manufacturers have shown at CES 2009 fully wireless home cinema equipment with the speakers receiving the audio signals wirelessly and removing the need to have lots of speaker cabling running all over the room.
